Photography Club Activities & Events

Learning, Shooting, and Sharing

Our programme is designed to provide a balanced mix of challenge, education, and social enjoyment. Details can be found on our club calendar.

A typicle month will see 3 core club nights:

  • Digital and/or print competition professionally judged
  • Inspirational talk from a professional photographer
  • Practical workshops and demonstrations

Other club nights held throughout the year include:

  • Be the Judge – Members analyse and score each others work
  • Fun compeititons – Members vote for the best photos taken over the summer and Christmas breaks
  • Field trips – In the summer when the weather is good, we head out for some photography

Here are more details on the core types of events we run throughout the year:

1. Visiting Speaker Talks

We regularly invite acclaimed photographers and specialists to present their work and share their expertise. These nights are invaluable for inspiration, learning about new genres, and understanding creative workflows. Previous talks have included:

  • Abstract and Minimalism
  • Impact and Mood
  • Iceland photography tours
  • Land, Sea and Air Revisited

2. Practical/Workshop Nights

These hands-on sessions allow members to develop technical skills in a friendly group setting. Activities often include:

  • Studio flash setups (using our club equipment)
  • Processing software tutorials (e.g., Photoshop, Lightroom)
  • Print mounting and preparation techniques
  • Specific camera function deep dives (e.g., focus stacking, HDR)

3. Internal Competitions

As detailed on our Competition Rules page, these are judged by an external expert who provides educational critiques on every image, helping members understand their strengths and areas for improvement.

4. Inter-Club Competitions

As members of the EAF, we participate in friendly competitions with other camera clubs in the region. This gives our members exposure to a wider range of photography and standards, elevating our collective game.

5. Field Trips & Outings

During the warmer months, the club organizes photo outings to locations like historic towns, nature reserves, or specialized events. These are great social opportunities to practice new techniques and get feedback in the field.
